Unifying the Movement for Better Birth Outcomes in California

About the California Coalition for Black Birth Justice
The California Coalition for Black Birth Justice is a statewide organization unifying the Black birth justice movement across California. Together, we are building a connected birth equity ecosystem — aligning leaders, strengthening the workforce, and partnering with health care systems to create lasting change.

What We Do

Connect and convene key leaders across California
We create the space and structure for alignment across leaders, organizations, and systems. We support the birth equity ecosystem with shared strategy, collective power, and a growing body of knowledge to guide action.

Support the Black birth justice workforce
The Coalition is committed to supporting the care and capacity of the Black birth justice workforce (i.e. midwives, nurses, lactation professionals, doulas, community organizers, social workers, researchers, etc.) by creating paid learning opportunities and facilitating healing, restorative spaces to support our wellbeing.

Partner with health care organizations and government to drive birth equity efforts
We work with hospitals and health systems, public health jurisdictions, clinics, and insurance payers to assess and scale their birth equity efforts through technical assistance, learning collaboratives, action labs, and more.

California state data is clear: Black birthing people are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, and more likely to suffer life-threatening childbirth complications compared to any other group in the state.
This is not biology. It is the result of discriminatory policies, chronic stress, and a healthcare system that delivers less quality and respectful care.
